Unfolded Ways. Rome as Never Read Before

Unfolded Ways Rome as Never Read Before is a contemporary art volume curated by Valentino Catricalà, offering a fresh and multifaceted perspective on Rome.

A visual and literary journey in 25 stages, where photography, literature, and contemporary art converge to reveal a new image of the Eternal City—suspended between memory and vision.

Curated by Valentino Catricalà, Unfolded Ways. Rome as Never Read Before is a contemporary art volume and a visual-literary journey in 25 stages, where photography, literature, and contemporary art converge to present a new vision of Rome.

Each stage of the book is marked by a work created by 25 international artists—Franco Angeli, José Angelino, Matteo Basilé, Elisabetta Benassi, Silvia Camporesi, Paolo Canevari, Gea Casolaro, Christo, Iginio De Luca, Rä di Martino, Tano Festa, Bill Fontana, Nancy Genn, Auriea Harvey, Anaïs Horn, H.H. Lim, Renato Mambor, Vincenzo Marsiglia, Mimmo Paladino, Vettor Pisani, Quayola, Marinella Senatore, Federico Solmi, Mauro Staccioli, Helen Tóth—each offering a unique and unexpected visual interpretation of the city.

Guiding the reader is a selection of literary texts spanning eras and cultures, creating a compelling dialogue between image and written word.

The volume also features the original project by the artist collective Squary Eyes, who created the Red Theatre: a sculptural installation made of 25 paper theatres, each reproducing at a 1:100 scale the stage dimensions of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Fragments of this work are embedded in the book, animating it with a surreal, pop-inflected paper world where the city transforms into an urban fairytale.

Unfolded Ways is an immersive experience—a book to read, to view, and to journey through with the imagination.

Published in a limited edition of 25 numbered copies bound by hand in red leather, with a copper and 24-karat gold sculpture forming the front cover, the volume celebrates the 25th anniversary of D’ORO Collection, reaffirming its place as a benchmark in Italian fine publishing.

Each copy of this special edition comes with its own sidebook, D’ORO Collection. A Cultural Luxury, which documents the creative and production process behind D'ORO Collection's volumes.

Unfolded Ways is an invitation to rediscover the Eternal City with new eyes, page after page. A book that, like Rome itself, never ceases to reveal itself—rewritten with every reading.
